In Richards' Resignation, An Important Lesson: Don't Trust Elites

January 19, 2011 Robert Burns warned us: "Best-laid schemes of mice and men often go awry." Here in Smugtown, when you have a group of elites who plan in seclusion and expect both obedience and veneration for their plans, it is humbling indeed when the plans begin to crumble. The abrupt (what other word is there for it) resignation of Deputy Mayor Thomas Richards provides Rochesterians with three teachings of the same lesson: Rochester's leaders are not nearly as wise as they think they are -- and a little healthy competition from the community is long overdue.
